There are quite a few people who would potentially benefit from a straighter smile, but think that getting one isn’t an option for them. They may not be a fan of braces, or worry that they can’t make time for a series of appointments with their dentist over the course of a year.
That said, there are a wide variety of ways that you can straighten your teeth that have nothing to do with braces. For one, veneers can give you a straighter smile in just two appointments! Here’s how.
How Does Misalignment Work?
Misalignment involves a wide variety of factors, and understanding them all requires years of schooling. However, there are two key factors in what you might call a “crooked smile:” the shape and the position of the teeth.
Smiles look crooked because the teeth are being pushed together in a way that causes them to clash. In principle, gapped teeth are the same way; the problem being where they are and how they’re shaped.
How Can Veneers Repair Misalignment?
Traditional braces move your teeth around until they’re in alignment with each other. They repair misalignment by addressing the teeth’s position. Veneers, on the other hand, allow your dentist to alter their shape.
Your dentist will remove a thin sliver of enamel and replace it with a porcelain shell. For orthodontic issues they will do this for several of your teeth, and design the veneers so that they fit perfectly with each other in your mouth.
Should I Get Braces or Veneers?
First, it’s worth noting that there are many problems that can’t be solved with veneers on their own. Under or overbites, for example, require specialized equipment to address. Veneers also involve removing a little bit of enamel, so you’ll need have veneers for the rest of your life, and will have to replace yours if they break.
That said, veneers offer convenience that braces simply don’t. They can be completed within just two appointments, and lack any long-term dietary restrictions. Veneers can also fix a much wider range of issues than braces can, covering up any chips or cracks that may have accumulated over the years.
Ultimately, no matter which option you choose, you can be sure that there’s a way to straighten your teeth that’s perfect for you.
