More often than not, people picture prosthetic teeth and gums floating in a glass of water next to someone’s bed being “cleaned.” In reality, if you have dentures you have to do more than soaking your dentures to keep them maintained.
Let’s explore the best ways to keep your dentures clean and strong for years to come. Here are 5 ways to get the most out of your dentures.
1. Be sure to brush your dentures thoroughly.
Your prosthetic teeth need just as much attention as natural teeth. Dentures can still build up stains, tartar, and dangerous bacteria just as natural teeth.
To avoid putting yourself at risk for dental issues, remove and brush your dentures with a soft tooth brush. You can use regular hand soap, mild dishwashing detergent, or a mild toothpaste to thoroughly clean your dentures. Also, soak them at night in warm water to loosen debris. Above all, just don’t boil your dentures!
2. Pay attention to the rest of your body.
Even if you have complete dentures (full mouth of replacement teeth), it is still extremely important to care for the rest of your mouth, especially gums. Whenever you take them out, give your mouth a good rinse and then massage your gums with a washcloth or soft toothbrush. If you have partial dentures, it’s important to properly brush and floss the natural teeth you still have to maintain optimal oral health.
3. It’s okay to give your dentures a break.
It is important to take your dentures out before you go to bed. Dentures are known for causing wear and tear on the mouth if they aren’t implant retained. They can rub against your gums and jawbone, causing irritation. Give your gums time to recover. Try to remove your dentures for at least six to eight hours a day.
4. Be careful with your dentures.
Since dentures are created from high-quality dental materials, you’ll want to be careful with them. When you’re cleaning your prosthetics, be sure to do so over a bowl of water or folded towel just in case they were to accidentally fall.
5. Fuel your body and mouth with nutritious foods.
Sometimes, dentures make it difficult to enjoy the foods you want and need if they aren’t implanted. Make sure you’re not missing out on essential nutrients. Practice indulging in a well-balanced diet. Vital vitamins and nutrients keep your gums and jaw bone healthy, helping to support your dentures and keep them functional.
6. It’s important to visit the dentist.
Following the tips on this list is important, but it’s still important to visit the dentist for professional cleanings and exams. Your dentist should perform a “fit and function” check to make sure your dental treatment is still helping you reach your optimal oral health. Your dentist along with the help of their dental hygienist can make your dentures sparkle like new in one appointment!
